Do you believe in angels? I do because the Bible says that they are given by God as “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation.” Through the years, I am certain that those angels were dispatched many times on my behalf and for the sake of my family.
Travelling home from the hospital in June 1991, we had our newborn buckled up in the car seat. It was raining and the roads were slick. I was going home on Martin Luther King Blvd in Chattanooga, TN on roads that were relatively free of excessive traffic and they were moving right along. That all changed in a second.
Coming over a hill at 45 mph, I was greeted by the sight of brake lights, glowing like Christmas trees. Every lane is bumper-to-bumper with cars as if it was rush-hour traffic. Instinctively, I slam on the pre-ABS brakes. The tires lock, the car fishtails, and all I see are the parked cars coming up on us fast!
Now, I think I’m a pretty good driver. But, I’m not that good! A spot opens just large enough for my car and my car slips into it like a stunt driver sliding into a parking place. There is no logical reason why the car stopped safely and nobody was injured or killed. It had to be a miracle!
I envision the angels taking my car and steering it into the hole while more angels pushed the other cars into safe positions. Did it happen that way? I don’t know. What I do know is that none of us should have escaped that situation without injury or worse. I do know that I couldn’t have maneuvered the car like that. I do know the Lord deserves all the credit.
And, I’m pretty sure that some of those angels requested reassignment from watching over me!
Think of all those “close calls” you’ve experienced. How is it possible you escaped? As the hymn writer said, “God will take care of you; Through everyday o’er all the way; He will care for you; God will take care of you.”
That’s God’s amazing continuing grace.
