Leviticus 25:8-10 introduces us to the Year of Jubilee. “And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. (9) Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. (10) And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.”
“The Year of the Jubilee involved a year of release from indebtedness and all types of bondage. All prisoners and captives were set free, all slaves were released, all debts were forgiven, and all property was returned to its original owners. In addition, all labor was to cease for one year, and those bound by labor contracts were released from them. One of the benefits of the Jubilee was that both the land and the people were able to rest.”1
Should the Lord tarry, January 23, 2023 is going to be a year of Jubilee for one particular set of people – the unborn baby.
As I write this devotional on Friday, June 24, I’m writing it on a day when the unborn babies have won a tremendous victory. Since 1973, the scourge of Roe v. Wade has been a blight on our nation. The Supreme Court of 1973 decided it was a Constitutional right for a woman to have an abortion. Through the last 49 years, nearly 64 million babies have been murdered in the womb thanks to that decision. Billions of federal dollars – taxpayer dollars – have been pumped annually to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that support abortion.
The Bible clearly demonstrates that life begins at conception. Science and biology prove it. Environmentalists know it to be true because they will defend and protect the conception of a bug using the very standards by which they condemn the life of an unborn child. Justice Samuel Alito said Roe v. Wade was “egregiously wrong from the start.” He is so right! However, the battle is far from over.
The Supreme Court has taken the battle out of the Federal hands and returned it to the states, their representatives, and their constituents. States now have the right to fully ban abortion or continue allowing abortions at any stage of pregnancy that the State deems “reasonable.”
“Chief Justice John Roberts … said he would have taken “a more measured course” with this case. Rather than overturn Roe v. Wade altogether, Roberts said he would have continued to recognize a right to get an abortion, and that the right should “extend far enough to ensure a reasonable opportunity to choose, but need not extend any further.”2 Justice Roberts, you are 100% wrong! Nobody has the right to kill a baby.
Liberals of all political persuasions are bemoaning this decision. Tonight is to be a “Night of Rage.” Crisis Pregnancy Centers and pro-life organizations are already experiencing vandalism. And the Democratic voices of leadership from former President Obama to current leaders are denouncing this as the worst decision ever handed down by the Supreme Court. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called this “one of the darkest days our country has ever seen.” Of course, “The Squad” are pontificating their displeasure with aggressive rhetoric.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared that “the Supreme Court is “Republican-controlled” and that it “has achieved the GOP’s dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions. This cruel ruling is outrageous and heart-wrenching,” Pelosi said.”3 Ms. Pelosi, a baby in the womb is not a reproductive health decision. That decision comes BEFORE conception – BEFORE you made the decision to reproduce.
Now, almost 50 years later, we can see where and how this country is divided. It’s not about political parties and red v. blue. We are a nation divided over the Bible and God, the One in whose image we are created. And this division is getting deeper every day! To call a ruling that supports life as cruel, outrageous, and heart-wrenching is egregious in and of itself.
Such statements from our national leaders ought to cause every blood-bought born-again believer to stand up and say, “This ruling isn’t the only change that’s happening. There’s going to be more. A LOT more!”
Is this devotional political? Absolutely — and I make no apology for it. The reason that it’s political is because the politicians have insisted on sticking their noses into issues of values, morality, and truth. Rather than accepting what God says, they’ve chosen to go against it, forcing the Christians to rise up and to take some stands. We MUST obey God rather than man.
Dear liberal politician, you have given the Christians no choice. Edmund Burke’s famous statement is true. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” It’s time for GOOD men and women – especially GOD’s men and women to arise and do the right thing!
JUBILEE is a time to be jubilant! This is a victory that was 50 years in the making. Let this be a surge for even more victories.
