There are some unanswerable questions in the universe that have troubled minds for thousands of years.
How come only your fingers and toes get wrinkly in the shower and nothing else does?
Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?
Why do they say a football team is the ‘world champion’ when they don’t play anybody outside the US?
Can a short person “talk down” to a taller person?
Isn’t good health just a slower rate at which to die?
If you describe something as indescribable, haven’t you already described it?
Where do all the missing socks go?
That last question is one we’ve pondered for a long time. In fact, today has been designated as a Memorial Day of sorts. It is National Lost Sock Memorial Day, a day to remember all those single socks whose mate has mysteriously disappeared while doing laundry. We cling to those single socks, hoping their missing counterpart will materialize a few loads later. Sadly, the pile of single socks just grows with no match in sight.
How long should we hang on to the single sock? Some will hold out indefinitely, certain that the missing sock will be found clinging to a bath towel or sweatshirt. I think it would be safe to say, though, that if the sock hasn’t shown up in a month or two, it might be time to say au revoir, arrivederci, sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, so long, and goodbye. If after a year you have a basket full of single socks, you might want to seek some help!
Here’s a bizarre, off-the-wall thought. If Jesus lost a sock, what would He do? Obviously, Jesus can’t “lose” anything because He is omniscient. Please – don’t stretch the question too far or you’ll miss the point. If Jesus could lose a sock in the laundry, what would He do?
Luke 15:3-7 says, “And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” Feel free to substitute the word sock for sheep.
What would Jesus do? He would go looking for it and He would find it, bringing it back to the other socks… I mean, sheep.
Each one of us who are saved were once that lost sheep. Jesus came looking for us, He found us, saved us, and carried us on His shoulders to the fold. Jesus didn’t give up on us and He kept looking until we were found.
John Newton penned those familiar words:
Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
And we can rest assured that we will never be lost again. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” (John 6:37-39)
