I respect and admire scientists. They’ve spent years getting educated and learning things that baffles most of society. They are extremely intelligent and speak in a language all their own. That being said, they are often times very slow learners. Case and point –
An article written by Mariano Tovar and published by msn.com on April 2, 2025, has this eye catching headline. Scientists discover that all humans come from the same mother who lived 200,000 years ago in Botswana.
“Inside every cell of the body there is an organelle called mitochondria that has a DNA distinct from that of the cell itself. It has 37 genes of its own and is descended solely from the mother’s mitochondrial DNA…
“To make matters worse, the ‘Y’ chromosomes are inherited paternally, so using the same technique as with mitochondrial DNA, studies have been done to arrive at an original first man.”1 So, not only is there a single, original mother shared by all humanity, there is an original dad. Scientists have dubbed them Mitochondrial Eve and Chromosonic Adam.
There are some big words in there that come right out of Biology 101. However, Tovar opens her article with a perfect observation. “If someone were to stand on a pulpit and say that all humans come from a first woman, Eve, and that this is an indisputable biblical truth, we would probably pay little or very little attention. But if a team of researchers were to publish in the prestigious scientific journal Nature that mitochondrial DNA proves that all of today’s humanity comes from a single woman, we would certainly not be so quick to dismiss it.”2
In other words, let a scientist say it and it’s profound. Let a preacher say it and its just the ignorance of religion talking. Call it what you will but who knew these truths first, the Christian or the scientist?
Genesis 3:20 says, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” And 1 Corinthians 15:45 says, “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul…” The BIBLE tells us that there was no race prior to Adam and Eve. They were the first, created by God and in His explicit image (Genesis 1:27), making them the progenitors of all humanity.
Now, the scientists also stated that the origins of the first family were in Botswana. That’s in the southern part of Africa – and a long way from the typical answer that the Garden of Eden was somewhere in the Middle East between Jerusalem and Iraq. Is Botswana even a possibility? I would suggest reading a couple of enlightening articles from Answers In Genesis. For those reading this devotion online, just click the links! Did all this happen 200,000 years ago? We must applaud the scientists and give them credit. They’re getting closer and closer to a young earth which is the correct answer if you interpret Scripture literally, historically, and dispensationally. They are still off, though. A great article written by Dr. Jason LaRouchie says, “The linear genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11 are unique in all of Scripture with respect to the age detail they provide (see, e.g., Genesis 5:3–11). Even if “son” at times means grandson or great-grandson (as can happen in Scripture), the specificity of the ages counters the likelihood of gaps. Moreover, a number of the seemingly “father-son/grandson/great-grandson” relationships are shown elsewhere to be just that — e.g., Adam with Seth (Genesis 4:25), Noah with Ham, Shem, and Japheth (6:10), Terah with Abraham (11:31).
“A solid explanation for the presence of specific ages in these genealogies is the messianic and missiological purposes of Genesis. Moses seems to have gone out of his way to show that God preserved the line of hope in every generation from Adam to Noah, from Shem to Terah, and from Abraham to Israel. The specified years all highlight the faithfulness of God to preserve his line hoping in the offspring promise of Genesis 3:15. As such, leaving out generations would have gone against the apparent purpose.
“Adding the ages in the genealogies points to humanity being around 6,000 years old.”3
God has had the answer to these questions all along. The question boils down to this, “Are we going to trust the wisdom of man with all of his training, education, and degrees? Or will we trust the wisdom of God?” 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 says, “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: (5) That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
