Besties

June 8, 2024 By PastorJWMacFarlane

Do you have a BFF?  That’s a best friend forever.  If so, you and your bestie are going to love today because it is National Best Friend Day and it’s time to celebrate that special person and the relationship you share.

“According to a Pew Research poll, 98% of teens have one or more close friends. And 78% of them say they have one to five close friends.”1  As we age, we find that our priorities change along with our lifestyle.  One best friend is about all most will have, just because hectic lives, families, spouses, and responsibilities don’t leave you much extra time – if any – for more than one!

The best friend is different than all the other friends.  They are the one with whom we share the deepest parts of our heart.  If we have a secret, chances are good that they are privy to it.   If nobody is laughing except you, your best friend knows why and joins with the laughter while everyone else looks at you both as if you’ve lost your minds!  Need a shopping buddy?  They’re there!  Want a second person in the fishing boat?  They’ll be there before the sun comes up.  Working on a project and need some help?  You know exactly who to call and what the answer will be.  Bored and want someone to be bored with you?  Never fear, bestie is here!

Perhaps the best example of best friends is pictured in the relationship between David and Jonathan.  1 Samuel 18:1-3 says, “And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.  (2)  And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.  (3)  Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.”  This friendship was so deep that when Saul, Jonathan’s dad, tried to do things to harm David, Jonathan would warn his friend, advising him to flee to safety.

1 Samuel 19:1-4 says, “And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.  (2)  But Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:  (3)  And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.  (4)  And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good.”

Now, that’s a good friend!

If you have a best friend, plan to do something with them today.  At the least, call or text them and let them know that they are loved by you and that you value the friendship.

Maybe you don’t have a BFF and it makes you feel a bit sad.  Wait a minute and hold on!!  If you are a Christian, Jesus has something to say to you in John 15:13-15.  “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  (14)  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  (15)  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

“What a friend we have in Jesus!” says the hymn writer.  Jesus is the BBFF – the best best friend and this is true FOREVER.
