I don’t know if it was just excitement for the Lord’s return, a marketing scam, or a ploy to keep the church riled up by those who were on “eclipse watch” last month but they were left highly disappointed when nothing significant happened. Prophecy predictors jump at any opportunity to declare an event to be a sign of the end times. This was no different.
“Troy Anderson and Pastor Paul Begley argue that the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, holds biblical importance. On this week’s episode of the Global Lane, Begley said the eclipse is a prophetic moment for several reasons. He notes that it will pass over seven American cities called Nineveh and one called Jonah, which makes him wonder if this is America’s Nineveh moment.”1
Others pointed to the eclipse that occurred in 2017 that went NW to SE. The 2024 eclipse went from SW to NE. The paths of the two eclipses crossed over the New Madrid Seismic Zone, originating in New Madrid, MO. Four of the largest quakes in North America happened here, “all occurring within a 3-month period between December 1811 and February 1812.”2
“In a report filed in November 2008, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that a serious earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone could result in “the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States,” further predicting “widespread and catastrophic” damage across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and particularly Tennessee, where a 7.7 magnitude quake would cause damage to tens of thousands of structures affecting water distribution, transportation systems, and other vital infrastructure. The earthquake is expected to also result in many thousands of fatalities, with more than 4,000 of the fatalities expected in Memphis alone.”3
Just in case you’re wondering, an eclipse DID occur in 1812. It was partial and viewable in the Bering Sea off the NW coast of Alaska – over 3,500 miles away. This doesn’t stop people from formulating some bizarre ideas!
It certainly doesn’t help people behave and think sensibly when a third celestial body intersects the alignment of the moon and sun. It’s known as The Devil’s Comet. All of this took place on the afternoon of April 8th and, guess what – NOTHING HAPPENED!
Answers In Genesis wrote an excellent article prior to the 2024 eclipse and shared the lessons that can be garnered from this event without being eclipsed (pun intended) by twisted theological and astronomical theories. The entire article can be found at https://answersingenesis.org/blogs/ken-ham/2024/04/02/solar-eclipse-reminds-us-of-biblical-truth/. Let me just share the main points and thoughts directly from the article.
- The mathematical precision of the heavens points to a Creator. Scientists can predict an eclipse decades, even centuries, in advance—nearly down to the very second! … The precision is extreme. Now, how is such precision possible if the universe is just the result of millions of years of random, chance processes? Randomness doesn’t result in such incredible order! Furthermore, it’s clear the heavens are governed by laws of nature and mathematics—but how can such immaterial laws form in a strictly material universe? They can’t! The precision of the eclipse is a wonderful reminder that, yes, there is a Creator.
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion…
- The heavens really do declare the glory of God. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse, you well remember the feeling of awe as you stared at the darkened sun with the sparkling “ring of fire” haloing it…If the beauty of something God made can inspire such a reaction…imagine what it will be like when we see the glory of the Lord face to face in eternity!
Psalms 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. (2) Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. (3) There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
- It’s obvious to all that there’s a Creator. Romans 1 reminds us that those who reject the Creator are without excuse, and moments like the total solar eclipse remind us of this. The dazzling beauty and mathematical precision of this event points us to the one who created it all, and those who are awed by the creation without giving praise to the Creator stand before him “without excuse” for their unbelief.
Romans 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (19) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. (20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse…
If you missed the 2024 eclipse, the next one will be on August 12, 2026. You will have to go a distance, though, to enjoy the totality. That will occur in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, Spain, and Russia. Perhaps you could plan a mission trip to our missionaries in Siberia around that time and enjoy it together!
