So many things happened on March 21 that here we are two days later, and we are still referencing those events. Let’s see if you can figure out what else gets celebrated on March 21. If we were to write the date differently, it would be 3/21. What if I wrote 321? How about 3…2…1. Did anyone automatically say, “LIFT OFF?” March 21 was declared by the National Calendar staff in 2018 as Countdown Day.
This is like Pi Day which I unfortunately missed. The numerical value of pi is 3.14159… Therefore March 14, 3/14, or 3.14 is National Pi Day – and it is to be celebrated with a slice of your favorite pie! What do we celebrate with on 3..2..1? Guess we’ll have to find something to countdown. Let’s combine 3/21 with 3/14 and enter a pie eating contest that is timed. As the time is about to expire, the crowd will shout out 3…2…1! Now, that’s the best of both days!
Many things are counted down and we just don’t realize it.
- NASA will have countdowns before the launching of a rocket.
- Game clocks will count down to the final second of regulation play.
- On December 31, we count down as we watch the Times Square ball fall. This was a
really big deal in 1999 as we were getting ready for the world to collapse under the pressure of Y2K. It obviously didn’t.
- We count down the days until big events like vacations and weddings.
- We might count down before yelling SURPRISE!
- As kids, we would sit in a classroom, watching the clock, mentally doing the count down until the bell rang.
- Some in church this morning will be counting down until the service ends (or when they think it should end)

10 – 9 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 Blastoff!
Somewhere in outer space, God has prepared a place
For those who trust Him and obey.
Jesus will come again, although we don’t know when.
The countdown’s getting lower every day.
10 and 9, 8 and 7, 6 and 5 and 4. Call upon the Saviour while you may.
3 and 2 coming through, the clouds in bright array.

This could be the day Jesus returns for His children. How awesome would it be to find ourselves raptured out of the church service and into the Heavenly church service around the throne of God! While we don’t know when the Lord is returning, the countdown is definitely getting lower every day.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 gives us the good news about this event. “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. (15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. (16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up (Greek: harpadzo; Latin: rapturo; English: raptured) together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (18) Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
