Job Qualifications

October 10, 2025 By PastorJWMacFarlane

If you’ve ever gone to a job interview, you have expectations of what will be asked.  Indeed.com lists the top 10 questions that should be practiced and prepared before the interview:

  • Why are you interested in our company?
  • Why are you interested in this position?
  • Can you share a little about yourself?
  • What got you into this career?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • Tell me about a challenge you experienced in your previous role.
  • Why did you leave your last job?
  • How do you deal with conflict in the workplace?
  • Why should we hire you over the other candidates?1

Those seem like reasonable questions.  But, suppose the job interviewer asked you a different set of questions.  Think about how you would answer if asked this strange questions.  The company that asked them is in parenthesis.

  • Can you tell me 10 things you could do with a pencil other than write? (airCFO)
  • How much does a Quarter Pounder weigh? (McDonalds)
  • Why is a tennis ball fuzzy? (Xerox)
  • You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color are you and why?  (Urban Outfitters)
  • How would you find the words that became obsolete in the English language during the 16th and 17th century? (Uber)
  • How many snow shovels were sold last year in the U.S.? (Axon)
  • How many square feet of pizza is eaten each year in the U.S.? (Goldman Sachs)
  • How would you describe the color green to a blind and deaf person? (GNC)
  • Have you ever stolen a pen from work? (Jiffy Software)
  • If you had turned your cell phone to silent and it rang really loudly, what would you tell me? (Kimberly-Clark)2
  • If you had to float an iPhone in mid-air, how would you do it? (Apple)3

Evidently, I would not be hirable by most of these companies because I’m not sure I could answer any with confidence except the question about the Quarter Pounder.

Here’s another question.  What qualifications do you have to serve the Lord?  Moses felt like he had none and he offered up his excuses to the Lord in Exodus 3-4.  It all began this way in Exodus 3:10-11.  “[God said]  Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.  (11)  And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

The last excuse that brought God to anger was in Exodus 4:10.  “And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”  Moses sure didn’t seem to have problems expressing himself.

I think our qualifications for service need to be as follows:  We must be 1)  saved; 2) surrendered; 3) summoned.  God takes care of the rest.

Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1:12-16, “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;  (13)  Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.  (14)  And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.  (15)  This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.  (16)  Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

It has been said that God doesn’t call the qualified.  He qualifies the called.  God wants to use His children which, in and of itself, is remarkable!   Rather than wobbling under the weight of the enormity of God’s call, surrender and let Him do an amazing work with you and through you.  As He works in our lives, it’s all for His glory.

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”  (1 Timothy 1:17)
