The American House Cleaners Association (AHCA) founded this special day in 2019. They wanted to recognize and honor the efforts of the over 19,000 professional house and business cleaners as well as the nearly 3.25 million independent and private individuals involved in cleaning homes and businesses or providing maid services to their clients. This is both honest and honorable work.
“According to the United States Department of Commerce, in the next few years, 8 out of every 10 dual-income households will invest in a form of house cleaning services.”1 What was once a luxury has quickly become a necessity as families are busier than ever. On one side, this opens the opportunity for employment for an individual and on the other side, families can focus more on the many directions they are pulled.
Agree or disagree, it’s your opinion and you are welcome to it. But while we think about this, we have to acknowledge that this should be a profession that every believer has on their resume.
1 Peter 4:17 says, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” God says that some house cleaning is needed in the house of the Lord – the body of believers.
The Enduring Word Commentary gives an excellent point preached by C.H. Spurgeon. “ It is right for judgment to begin at the house of God. “There is equity in it; for Christians profess to be better than others, and so they ought to be. They say they are regenerate, so they ought to be regenerate. They say that they are a holy people, separated unto Christ; so they ought to be holy, and separate from sinners, as he was.”
As you read Peter’s words, remind yourself that God is providing the cleaning service and the reason for it is because the church has failed to do the cleaning themselves. 1 Corinthians 11:27-31 says, “Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (28) But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. (29) For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. (30) For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (31) For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.”
If we would judge ourselves – if we would keep our own house clean – God wouldn’t have to step in and do the cleaning. But, when He is forced into that position, He will do the most thorough cleaning than we could possibly imagine!
Too often, God has to step in a do the cleaning because we are too busy trying to clean up others, but we aren’t taking care of ourselves. Busy bodies and tattlers get all up in someone else’s business, trying to tell them how wrong they are and what they need to do differently. The buttinsky will say, “Oh, I’m taking care of myself as well.” But that’s not what the Bible says to do.
Jesus very bluntly said in Matthew 7:5, “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.” Jesus doesn’t say, “While you’re working on getting the beam out of thine own eye, work on the mote in your brother’s eye. You can multitask and do both at the same time.” Instead, the Lord’s words require us to take care of our own issues, first, and to see it
Since the Christian is the house of the Lord, the temple of the Holy Spirit, let’s take our dirty homes to the Lord and prayerfully say, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:10)
