Happy Mother’s Day, moms! On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first official Mother’s Day, putting in place a yearly celebration of the virtues of motherhood. The text of Proclamation 1238 reads:
Whereas, By a Joint Resolution approved May 8, 1914, “designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, and for other purposes,” the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings, and the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country;
And Whereas, By the said Joint Resolution it is made the duty of the President to request the observance of the second Sunday in May as provided for in the said Joint Resolution;
Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.
In Witness Whereof, I have set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed.
Done at the City of Washington this ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States one hundred and thirty-eight.
WOODROW WILSON1
Here we are 110 years later and we still celebrate mom with flowers, cards, chocolates, mani/pedis, or other acts to show our love and appreciation for them and all they do. Sadly, some children will forget mom and do nothing for them. Then, there’s the husbands who say, “She’s not my mom. Why should I do anything for her today?” My heart breaks for the women who are shown such disrespect and callousness. It must be such a joy for them to live in this environment!
Adam honored his wife by naming her and recognizing what would be her greatest accomplishment. Genesis 3:20 says, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” God said moms (yes, you too, dad) are to be honored. Exodus 20:12 says, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
One of the most honorable things a mom does is to introduce her children to Jesus and to the faith that she already possesses. 2 Timothy 1:5 and 3:15 tells about one of those special moms and grandmas. “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also… (15) And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
Moms, thank you for the great job you do. Thank you for the many thankless tasks you tend to each day. Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for your involvement with your children and family. Thank you for your smile, patience, comfort, kindness, and grace. I hope you will be spoiled well today and reminded daily that you are a special, significant part of the family.
Happy Mother’s Day and may there be many more for you in the years to come.
