No More Moon?

January 16, 2026 By PastorJWMacFarlane

If you enjoy looking into the night sky and provided there is little to no cloud cover, you will see a waning crescent moon tonight.  The next full moon will be on February 1st.  This unique celestial body is neither a star or planet.  It is considered as Earth’s natural satellite.

The moon is considerably smaller than the earth, the former being 2,160 miles in diameter compared to a 7,918 mile diameter of the latter.  The surface of the earth is over 13 times greater than the moon and it would take 80 moons to equal the mass of the earth.1

Imagine if the moon was missing.  If the federal government would have followed through on their plans, there is a possibility that this could have become a reality, in part or in full.

Air Force Project A119 was developed in 1958.  The United States had been involved in the Cold War since 1947 and American confidence in winning this war was drifting.  A major focus of the war was about nuclear weaponry.  Someone at the Pentagon had a brainstorm.  Let’s detonate a nuclear bomb on the moon that would be so explosive that the light of the blast could be seen by everyone on the planet.  That’ll show those Ruskies – who had a similar idea in the works.  Eventually, the Air Force scraped the plan (as did Russia) believing that the risks outweighed the benefits.  Instead of blowing up a nuke on the moon and not knowing the catastrophic potential, it was decided that putting a man on the moon would be a better showcase of superiority.

If the moon could be destroyed or its orbit altered, what would happen on earth besides not having something beautiful to see in the night sky?  Scientists predict that…

  • Tides would change, lessened by the absence of the moon’s gravitational pull. This would result in temperature changes and the loss of motion in the waters, adversely affecting marine life and biology.  Those depending on the sea to make a living would experience significant financial loss.
  • The rotation of the earth would accelerate. The 24-hour day we’ve come to know and love would be reduced to a four or five hour day.
  • Seasons would change as would the amount of daylight due to the earth’s rotational axis being altered. Many areas would be plunged into a near perpetual darkness while other areas of the planet would have reduced lighting.  This would affect vegetation and nocturnal animals.
  • Scientists speculate that a blast great enough to destroy the moon would cause pieces of the moon to slam into the earth, thus destroying it.

Personally, I’m not worried about any of this happening because I know the One who created it all and I know what He has said about it.

Genesis 1:14-18 says, “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:  (15)  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.  (16)  And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.  (17)  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,  (18)  And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.”

In Revelation 21:23, we see the last reference in the Bible about the moon.  “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.”  The sun, moon, and stars have served their purpose and their usefulness has ended.

Only God gets to say when the celestial bodies have finished their purpose.  Till then, we enjoy their beauty, marvel in their construction, and their delicate balance.  To even suggest that all this is a result of the Big Bang or evolutionary birth is an ignorance without compare!  Only an Intelligent Designer could have made all this happen.  To Him be all the honor and glory!!!

“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;  (4)  What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Psalms 8:3-4)
