Parents

July 27, 2025 By PastorJWMacFarlane

In 1994, Republican Senator Trent Lott introduced a bill that became Congressional Resolution (36 U.S.C. § 135) and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.  The resolution established this day as National Parents’ Day.  The resolution recognized the “…uplifting, and supporting role of parents in the rearing of children.”1

You wonder, “Why do we need this day?  We have Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June.”  This day recognizes the role of parenting.  It goes beyond just birthing or conceiving a child.  It encompasses the 24/7/365 commitment to a role that is exhausting, sleepless, and often thankless.  You never know what a hard job parenting can be until you become one.  Then, you understand very quickly what your parents went through and now, it’s your turn!

There are some great quotes from Christians about parents and parenting.  I’m going to let these individuals do the talking today and then I’ll close with Scripture.

“Children are truly a blessing from God. Unfortunately, they don’t come with an instruction manual. But there’s no better place to find advice on parenting than the Word of God, which reveals a heavenly Father who loves us and calls us His children. It contains great examples of godly parents. It gives direct instructions on how to parent, and it is filled with many principles we can apply as we strive to be the best parents we can be.”  Adrian Rogers

“You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, training them up in God’s fear, minding the house, and making your household a church for God as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of Hosts.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“No parent gives mercy better than one who is convinced that he desperately needs it himself.  It is only rest in God’s presence and grace that will make you a joyful and patient parent.”

“Your children need God’s law, but you cannot ask the law to do what only grace can accomplish.”

“So your hope as a parent is not found in your power, your wisdom, your character, your experience, or your success, but in this one thing alone: the presence of your Lord. The Creator, Savior, Almighty, Sovereign King is with you. Let your heart rest. You are not in this parenting drama alone. Your potential is greater than the size of your weaknesses, because the One who is without weakness is with you, and he does his best work through those who admit that they are weak but in weakness still heed his call.”  Paul David Tripp

“The family should be a closely knit group. The home should be a self-contained shelter of security; a kind of school where life’s basic lessons are taught; and a kind of church where God is honored; a place where wholesome recreation and simple pleasures are enjoyed.”  Billy Graham

“You want to mess up the minds of your children? Here’s how – guaranteed! Rear them in a legalistic, tight context of external religion, where performance is more important than reality. Fake your faith. Sneak around and pretend your spirituality. Train your children to do the same. Embrace a long list of do’s and don’ts publicly but hypocritically practice them privately… yet never own up to the fact that its hypocrisy. Act one way but live another. And you can count on it – emotional and spiritual damage will occur.”  Charles (Chuck) Swindoll

“We do not develop habits of genuine love automatically. We learn by watching effective role models – most specifically by observing how our parents express love for each other day in and day out.” Josh McDowell

Genesis 18:17-19  And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;  (18)  Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?  (19)  For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

Colossians 3:18-21  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.  (19)  Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.  (20)  Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.  (21)  Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
