Today is National Sanctity of Life Day, typically recognized on the third Sunday of January by presidential proclamation from President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
According to the Sanctity of Human Life webpage, the total number of abortions in the U.S. from the time it was legalized in 1973 until 2020 was over 63.6 million babies. In 2020 alone, there were 930,020 abortions which averages out to 2,248 per day or about 106 per hour. That’s almost two abortions – two babies murdered every minute.1
“These statistics include only surgical and pill abortions. Because many contraceptive measures are abortifacients (drugs that induce or cause abortions), it is important not to overlook the number of children killed by chemical abortions. Since 1965, an average of 11 million women have used abortifacient methods of birth control in the United States at any given time. Using formulas based on the way the birth control pill works, pharmacy experts project that about 14 million chemical abortions occur in the United States each year, providing a projected total well in excess of 610 million chemical abortions between 1965 and 2009.”2
Driven by women’s rights activists’ groups and organizations like Planned Parenthood (PP), there is a reason why the numbers are as extreme as they are. Besides being driven by the Devil, who is here to “steal, kill, and destroy, (John 10:10), it seems that there is a financial drive behind this. Just look at the numbers.
- PP non-government clinic income: $372.0 million
- PP donations revenue: $997.5 million ($2.73 million/day)
- PP government grants and reimbursements: $699.3 million ($1.9 million/day)
- Total profit: $178.6 million
- Total income: $2.054 billion ($56.3 million/day)3
Those numbers are staggering! And grievous. To think that a little life is snuffed out to make things more convenient for the mother or to put some extra money in a doctor’s pocket is despicable! Even by their own admissions and definitions, PP, doctors, and scientists KNOW that they are destroying a life but, without feeling or care, they continue to do so and fight for that right to murder an unborn child in the womb.
Then, there are those who spew such hateful vitriol as they picket and protest, demanding
the right to abort. Their arguments are so illogical! “Abortion is Healthcare.” “My Body, My Choice.” “Don’t Tell me What To Do With My Body.” And here’s one for the books – “If an AR-15 (that’s a rifle) could get pregnant, would the GOP finally regulate them?”
Every abortion violates Scripture. Exodus 20:13 cannot be any plainer. “Thou shalt not kill.” Such a verse doesn’t exactly require explanation, does it? It seems to be crystal clear. The word “kill” is the Hebrew word for murder. Abortion is the murder of the unborn child.
Human life should be respected, if for no other reason than it was created in the “image of God.” (Genesis 1:27) Such a life has intrinsic value beyond our comprehension. And there is no doubt that God sees the life in utero as valuable.
Psalms 139:13-18 says, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. (14) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (15) My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (16) Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. (17) How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! (18) If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.”
As Christians, we know that there is only one stand that is right on this issue, and it is to stand for the life of the unborn child.
For those who are on the fence about this, let’s make something abundantly clear as we go into this day. That life in the womb is innocent, not in the moral or spiritual sense but in the sense that it has done nothing wrong or deserving of death. Remember the strong statement the Lord makes in Proverbs 6:16-17, “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: (17) A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…”
