Spouses Day

Today is National Spouses Day.  This day has been around since the mid-1980s but doesn’t receive much recognition.  Perhaps that’s because we are just 20 days away from Valentine’s Day and we wouldn’t want to spoil the fun of that, would we?

Yes, there are many in our world – sorry to say but typically of the male persuasion – who are about as tender and romantic as a brick.  However, Brides.com tells us that there “are 22 romantic holidays to observe with your significant other this year.”¹  The first occurred on January 6^th – National Cuddle Day.  The last is October 25:  National I Care About You Day.  Oddly, Brides.com did not include Valentine’s Day in their list so, technically, there are 23 romantic holidays.

Now, if you are wrinkling up your nose about another contrived and obligatory romantic holiday, my question to you is this:  Why do you protest?  Where’s the harm?  How can you ever show too much love to your spouse?

How well do you know your spouse?  This might be a good indicator that you need to start celebrating them a bit more.  Here’s some questions to answer that might be revealing.

Can you name two or more of your spouse’s grandparents? Do you know three places your partner would love to visit? Can you name all your spouse’s best friends? Do you know what your partner likes best about her/his work/job? Do you know your spouse’s least favorite task around the house? Do you know what food your partner does not like or cannot eat? Do you know what your partner is most proud of? Do you know what your partner is most insecure about? Do you know which superpower your partner wish that s/he had? Where did you first meet? Where was your first date? Where was your first kiss? Who said “I love you” first? What is your partner’s favorite color? What size shirt, shoe, pants, or dress do they wear? What is his/her favorite sports team? What is your spouse’s dream vacation? What is your spouse’s love language?  What makes them melt?

It would seem that that is a sufficient number of questions to start a fight – uh, I mean, discover how well you really know each other.

Solomon had a couple of great things to say about a spouse.  Take today seriously and practice the verses Solomon gives.

Proverbs 18:22  Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

Ecclesiastes 9:9  Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
