President Biden along with many liberal lobbyists are making the claim that “more children in America die of a gunshot wound than any other reason, that’s stunning and that is sick.”1 According to sources, 1,600 children died in 2023 from gunshot wounds while 6,192 were shot.2 There is no denying that this is tragic. One in either category is too many. But is his statement totally accurate?
According to the U.S. census bureau, there were 3,150,000 deaths in 2023.3 Among those deaths, the number of kids dying by gunshots is rising – as is death by suicide, overdose, car accidents, and even COVID. Very little, though, is said about the increased number of kids dying from childhood diseases and cancers. That wouldn’t play into the narrative of the politician’s agenda. Statistics are spun by special interest groups to rile up the American public to accomplish stripping Americans of their guns and 2nd Amendment rights.
Rather than blaming guns, we need to see that something is going seriously wrong in the hearts and minds of kids. What is pushing them to the brink of lethal violence? Why are those in the prime of life despairing to the point of suicide? Why are they seeing drugs as the answer when the evidence clearly shows the opposite?
The issue is not guns. I’m old enough to remember guns coming to school as students were going to their friend’s house afterwards to hunt rabbits or squirrels. Guns were on the racks in the back window of their trucks. Someone older than me was telling me how some would bring their guns on the bus and put them in their lockers during the day. Let me tell you, there were some mean bullies roaming the halls back then. You might get stuffed in trash cans, lockers, or given a swirlie. You might get hung on a hook and left dangling till someone got you down. But you never feared being shot.
The guns haven’t changed. People have changed. To put it Biblically, 2 Timothy 3:13 says, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse…” And this can be seen in the true leading cause of death among children that is sanctioned by our President and has been legalized since 1973: abortion.
Abortion has “been the leading cause of death globally for the past five years, with 44 million babies losing their lives in 2023, accounting for 40% of all deaths). The numbers vary because the number of chemical abortions is unknown, but some estimates are that around 1 million or so abortions occur in the USA every year.”3
The 2nd Amendment rights are just fine the way they are and should be left alone. It’s the rights of the unborn baby that are in jeopardy and need to be addressed. 
Proverbs 6:16-19 says, “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: (17) A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, (18) An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, (19) A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”
God hates and abhors hands that shed innocent blood. This is true of those who would use a gun to settle their disagreements or to express their animosity of humanity. It’s true of those who would peddle drugs. And it’s true of those who would surgically or chemically extinguish the life from the womb, discarding it like trash for the convenience of the mother.
Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Do we understand that this is the issue right here? Not guns. Not the medical profession. Not the individual who sells the drugs. Not the person who is discouraged to the point of suicide. The heart is the problem. Fix the heart and you fix the problems.
How can the heart be fixed? Israel was given these instructions that apply to us today. Ezekiel 18:30-31 says, “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. (31) Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”
Jesus said it very simply in Mark 1:15. “… repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
Make no mistake about it. The heart of man needs the touch of God. And the heart of man will not escape the Lord’s examination. Repent before it’s too late. “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jeremiah 17:10)
