We shouldn’t be surprised! This has constantly been true about science. Brilliant minds are so sure of themselves until they are proven otherwise. An MSN.com article titled 25 Science “Facts” from the 90s That Turned Out to Be Wrong just goes to show that you cannot trust science implicitly. For instance –
We have been taught for the longest time that there are only three states of matter: gas, solid, and liquid. Ice, water, and steam were used to illustrate this. However, there are now more than 20 different states of matter. That’s a far cry from three!
Do you remember that graphic of the tongue and we were told that our tongue tasted certain things in certain places? The tip of the tongue detected salt. The back of the tongue tasted bitterness. The back sides of the tongue identified sour flavors. Sweet tastes were in the front middle part of the tongue. We were so sure of this until it was discovered that every part of the tongue has special taste bud receptors that can detect every type of flavor.
In the 90s, we were told that we only use 10% of our brain. Some used even less! “Barry Gordon at Johns Hopkins University finally put this to rest in 2008. His neuroimaging research showed the brain constantly active throughout. Here’s the kicker: even during sleep, the brain burns 20% of the body’s total energy while being only 2% of our body weight. The Human Connectome Project (2009-2014) proved every part of our brain has a purpose, with 180 distinct regions working together.”1
Not to be left out, geography class had some errors. Do you remember being told that the Great Wall of China could be spotted from space? Well, I don’t know what those people in space were seeing but it wasn’t the Great Wall. At its widest part, it is 16-20 feet wide. It takes special equipment to spot this and cannot be viewed with the naked eye. Perhaps those in space were seeing airports or highways whose width is far greater than the Great Wall.
Through the centuries, science has been proven to be wrong on numerous occasions. The Bible, though not typically viewed as a science book, contains scientific facts that have been right all along.
The earth is round, not flat. Isaiah 40:21-22 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? (22) It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
The Earth is suspended in space. Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
The Bible talks about hygiene. Leviticus 15:13 And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.
The Bible teaches about the importance of blood. Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
The Bible teaches about oceanography and currents. Psalms 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. Jonah 2:5-6 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. (6) I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
Trust the Bible. View science skeptically. It may be right but it could also be very wrong.
Psalms 19:7-10 says, “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. (8) The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. (9) The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. (10) More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”
