Wife Day

September 21, 2025 By PastorJWMacFarlane

Some who read this devotional today are going to roll their eyes and scoff at the celebration.  Others will assume this is just another Hallmark holiday, blaming the card company for any celebration that doesn’t suit their fancy.  But, since 2006, the third Sunday of September has been designated as National Wife Appreciation Day.  And there’s nothing wrong with that!

The origins of this celebration are a mystery and cannot be unearthed.  It’s believed, though, that the day was intended to give honor to all wives, not just moms as we do on Mother’s Day.  That seems like a very nice gesture to me.

Quite honestly, guys need a little help sometimes in the romance department.  I’ve heard it explained in hunting terms.  Guys are wired to achieve goals.  While dating, we are on the hunt for a Mrs.  When we find the one that sparks our interest, we begin to woo them.  The charm and romance flows out of us like water.  As things progress, there is a proposal, a ring, a ceremony, a honeymoon, and then real life begins.  If a guy isn’t careful, he will feel as if the goals have been met without realizing that there are many more goals to attain throughout married life.  Romance dwindles to a dribble and by the time you hit your 25th wedding anniversary, you’ve settled into a comfortable rut of boredom.

If it takes a special day to help give us a nudge towards romance and demonstrating our appreciation, so be it!

There are many passages in the Bible the extol the virtues of a wife.  Consider a small sampling:

Genesis 2:18  And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Proverbs 18:22  Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

Proverbs 12:4  A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband…

Proverbs 19:14  … a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Proverbs 31:10  Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Ecclesiastes 9:9  Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

Go out on a limb today.  Ask your spouse to be honest with you.  Is there just a spark of romance left or is there a fire burning?  1 Peter 3:7 says, “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”
